I suspect that when most folks think of science fiction, they equate it with paperback-of-the-month books filled with formulaic space battles against poorly-conceived and luridly drawn alien beings, or with the handwringing humanity-is-a-virus dystopianism, anti-technological paranoia, and silly socialist utopianism which has permeated SF over the past several decades.
