The “Big Five” Principles

Denver Metro Young Republicans focuses on the promotion of five core principles:

  • Limited Government — we believe that the best government is a small, Constitutionally-constrained one. The public sector does little well, and the more it does, the less well it does it. Bigger government is an invitation to corruption, both of public officials and of private citizens, and comes at the expense of not merely the taxes taken from us by force, but our hard-won liberties.
  • Strong National Defense — a weak defense invites attack. We believe that a strong national defense is not only vital to the preservation of our liberty, but one of the few legitimate roles of the federal government.
  • Free-Market Economics — we believe capitalism is the only moral philosophical system. Free individuals should be able to trade freely, without government intervention or regulation. Interference in the economy corrupts both government and business. Government’s role in the economy should be limited to punishment for cases of force and fraud.
  • Individual Rights and Personal Responsibility — we believe the individual is the basic unit of human institutions, not an amorphous super-entity called “Society”. It follows from this that rights are held by individuals, and not to identity groups, mass movement mobs, or grievance gangs. Along with individual rights, however, comes the individual responsibility to understand those rights and exercise them wisely, with due respect for the equal rights of others, and to protect them vigorously whenever they are under assault.
  • Rule of Law — we believe that the proper function of the law is as the last arbiter of disputes between the rights of individuals. As the “rules of the game”, the law should be transparent, rational, predictable, and objective, not byzantine, arbitrary, or subject to political whims and the loud voices of the emotion-driven mob. The law should never be used as a pretext or a tool for stripping innocent citizens of their rights or property.
