Note to our Libertarian cousins: this kind of thing isn’t going to win you followers (at least not many, and not of the quality that will help you become a major party):
The brochure for the convention featured a talk titled “Inside NASA” by a Dr. David Hoagland. It turns out that’s an error, according to the convention web site: it’s “Do We Still NEED NASA?” by Richard Hoagland. Yes, that Richard Hoagland. The title of the talk would seem to fit into an LP convention, where many people might be skeptical of the need for federal funding for a national space agency. The description of the talk starts off like a good fit:
Mr. Hoagland will address the urgency to redefine and refocus NASA on the critical 21st Century scientific, technological and economic problems facing the United States during the next presidential administration.
So far, so good.
He will also reveal –with official NASA imagery — startling scientific discoveries NASA, by law, has deliberately withheld from the American people for more than 40 years!
Okay, not so good.
Those hoping to see a companion presentation by world-reknowned metallurgist and civil engineer Rosie O’Donnell will, sadly, have to wait until the DNC riots convention in August.
(And why is it I’m only hearing that the Libertarian convention is in Denver three weeks before it happens? Someone in the LP dropped the ball on publicizing this, if I live here and only learn about it from a DC-based space policy blog.)
More on Hoagland here, for those who’ve never heard of the guy.

Tom,
Good points on the PR gaffe and the “withheld scientific discoveries.” From a political and perception standpoint, neither helps their case.
However, I agree with Libertarian views on more issues than so-called ‘mainstream’ (aka neo-conservative) Republicans. The GOP at the national level is like a headless chicken running around the barnyard, with damn little foresight, vision and leadership.
Instead of criticizing the Libertarian party, wouldn’t it be better to re-focus and re-double the efforts to improve the Republican party? I’m tired of hearing about these political pissing matches when we’ve got food and energy prices going through the damn roof, a declining US Dollar, and tens of millions of illegal immigrants in our country. Instead of trying to find answers to these problems, it looks like a couple of kids on a grade school playground yelling back and forth why so-and-so is worse than they are.
In marketing and politics you must know your audience. Right now the audience (also known as the electorate, including yours truly) is getting fed up with both major parties focusing on stupid stuff like Obama’s pastor, and whether the Shias and Sunnis in Iraq can get along and have a Coke and a smile.
Congress’ approval ratings are near (or at) the lowest in history, and the President’s aren’t much higher. Remember the ‘06 election, and how that turned out? Unless Republicans start focusing on solutions to current issues (and communicating them to voters), ‘08 won’t be much better.
